Start with bounded work
Treat an enterprise agent as a constrained operator. Begin with tasks whose inputs, permitted tools, expected outputs, and stop conditions can be stated and verified.
Read-only research, exception summaries, and draft generation are safer starting points than payments, deletion, publication, or access changes.
Four layers of control
- Task boundaries prevent an open-ended objective from expanding into unrelated actions.
- Least privilege binds every tool call to the initiating user, tenant, and permitted data scope.
- Audit records preserve the requester, inputs, tool parameters, response summaries, decisions, approvals, and result.
- Human approval shows the exact target and impact before any high-risk or irreversible action.
A practical rollout
After read-only tasks are stable, introduce reversible writes such as drafts or pending tasks. Require idempotency, input validation, timeouts, and explicit error classes for every tool.
Acceptance testing should include duplicate requests, stale data, denied permissions, upstream timeouts, and rejected approvals—not only the successful path.
Pre-launch checklist
- Is the responsible person and affected scope visible for every action?
- Do agent permissions match the initiating user’s business permissions?
- Can retries create duplicate orders, charges, or notifications?
- Can an audit trail reconstruct the full task and approval chain?
- Can the workflow safely return to a human when models or tools fail?
